A reader asks (somewhat jokingly) about wine and how to incorporate this into our survival preparation… so I will take the bait and post this frivolous post in return…
Here is a new product – dehydrated wine with 8.2% alcohol
Mountaineering gourmets no longer have to forgo a glass of red wine after conquering a peak. Trek‘n Eat has now launched a new red wine in the form of a powder. The beverage powder that comes in convenient portions packed in pouches has an alcoholic content of 8,2%, which is similar to a light bottled wine. A matching mulled wine has also been developed for expeditions in snow and the cold – for celebrating the special moment at night camp.
There is also a company marketing backpacking beer…Pat’s Backcountry Beer
Whiskey is also considered a potentially valuable barter item in the event of a major disaster, along with cigarettes. Some survivalists recommend putting a case or two of whiskey, bourbon, gin, etc. into long-term storage to trade for other items…

WOW! I’ll be sneaking this and my astronaut ice cream into the movies tonight.
Rob,
Some Johnny Walker would trade up very well I think. I’ve seen what people would do for a smoke too.

Silly Rob! You THINK I’m kidding . . . no my friend, I’m Irish, not kidding.
We need a little tipple to get through the days.
I actually interviewed a scientist who was working on the formula for dehydrating beer so it would be tasty when rehydrated . . . that was a few years back. Glad to see science has advanced!
So ladies and gents, stock up on wine in a box for bartering purposes!

The title had me laughing…. Good to know you’ve thought of everything Rob.

Years ago I was hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney (the highest peak in the Cont. US) with a buddy. We took along a bottle of Peppermint Schnapps to celebrate when we got to the summit. But by the time we got up there we were both suffering so badly from altitude sickness that the mere thought of drinking it made us throw up.
Alcohol is better for bargaining than any other use in a survival situation, although when things are really in the crapper a wee dram or two couldn’t hurt.

Great information and great ideas.
Of course, we must be mindful to rotate our stocks.

Tongue in cheek maybe, but highly practical.
I imagine alcohol – particularly spirits – would be a very valuable commodity, post disaster. You (or more to the point – other people) can’t drown sorrows in gold or silver or bits of green paper! Not particularly perishable either.

Too funny Lisa.
Yes I can see where stock piling alcohol and smokes would be to your advantage. Some people just can’t live without it and can get a little fiesty if they have go long with out them.

Ah, for Muslims, it’s inconceivable for them to store up wine for batering purpose.
For a non-drinker, it’s an exotic item too.
