Do You Have a First Aid Kit?

by Rob on September 27, 2009

Many families don’t even have a decent first aid kit in their house. Here are the top 2 sellers on Amazon, the first is more inclusive of outdoor injury items but both are a good starting point.

#1 Seller…

# 2 seller…

We will talk more about medical supplies in later posts, but a decent First Aid Kit is a must…

And if you need a book on basic First Aid, this one is a good start…

You should also have a First Aid Kit in each of your cars… (this link is for a TWO-PACK):

And think about taking a First Aid training course in your local area. You may not have easy access to doctors or a hospital in a real emergency and you might save the life of someone you love with a little preparation…

Apparently, some items within the first aid kits have expiry dates on them.

So we need keep tab on that too.

I would have never thought this subject would be so broad and important. You do an awesome job showing the importance.

Rob,
Very good things to have. I am so glad I took my EMT training way back in the day. I still have the knowledge and can use it when I need it. It has been handy.

I have a small first aid kit in the house, but it is really just a package of bandages, a compress and a few ointments. You’re so right about being prepared. When I worked in construction, I used to carry CPR masks and a while host of other things, but then the possibility for severe injury was much higher.

An additional tip is to make sure your first aid kit is easily accessible, and everone in your family (and the babysitter!) knows where it is!

Great reminder. The best first aid kit I have is the one in my car I think. My husband has an old one from the military but the bandages are all yellow and the ointments are all dried up – time for the trash! I did have a great one that I made myself when I ran a daycare in my home, but I’ve used lots of the supplies over the years and never replaced them.

I agree with previous posts that you do a great job at pointing out the necessity of certain items. I have a family and we have first aid kits…lying around somewhere…that need updating. I am on my way to Amazon!

Thanks
Jennifer

Take Basic then Advanced First Aid, Red Cross does good work. EMT is a stretch of both time and money(Legal considerations as well). Love Quick Clot stuff, use on arms and legs only, clot to the heart is a Game Ender.

You need mobile kit(wilderness) and a home/base kit. Learn how to use them! Duct tape and super glue are useful additions.

I have a weird love of duct tape cause it is soooo useful. I attempted making a bag out of it which alas turned into a sticky mess. It is important to become aware of things you can use to improvise in an emergency too (ebook?). I just restocked my kit.

Wow, great point. Need to have one of those in the car. I have other items that seem appropriate for car travel: sleeping bag and tent, hand crank strobe light, crow bar, various straps and all in a floral bag. :)

First aid kit weighs next to nothing and is far more likely to be useful.

Hi Rob,

excellent advise for emergency preparedness with such simple and doable action steps to take. And yes, do have in your car and each residence, like the summer vacation rental or the fishing/hunting cabin.

I have been fortunate to have had a first aid kit in the vehicle, one time.

Great advice!
