“Before you buy gold, buy what you’ll need the gold for.”

by Rob on September 29, 2009

You can’t eat gold.

When it comes to survival, you need to have access to shelter, water, and food first.  And a way to defend what you have.

Having gold and silver saved to barter for necessary items WILL NOT do you much good in a natural disaster or in the early days of a financial panic, or terrorist attack.  You need to be able to survive on what you have available.

Gold is a fine way to store some of your wealth, but…

“Before you buy gold, buy what you’ll need the gold for.”

Excellent advice. “Stuff” is cheaper now, than the gold.

While gold is good for a lot of things, in a breakdown of society other things will be more important in the short and medium terms. Think Katrina. In that situation all your gold was simply something else to steal.

Food, then guns, then Gold.

I like Steve’s advice

food, guns, gold

For me it’s food, ammo, and gold. Have plenty of guns

A very good point indeed! Gold gives you wealth, and that wealth may provide you freedom. But your basic needs always have to be taken care of first.

Water would have to be the first thing I’d have to have not only for drinking but cleaning washing…

Excellent advice. I’m already looking around for some information on what local plants are eatable and how to prepare them.

Any tips on sustainable water purification systems?

Very good points. Yes, I suppose gold would become something else for people to steal from you. I would probably stock up on some over the counter medications as well. We had about $250.00 of a health care account to use up last year. If you don’t use it, they keep it. So I went to CVS and stocked up on all sorts of over the counter stuff! But I’ll need to be careful that it all isn’t expired.

Good thought. No sense holding all the gold when you’re hungry, and if there is a major catastrophe those who can feed themselves and who have gold will be able to sit out the maddness that takes over for a few days/weeks.

Yes, I agree. Stock up the (yummy vegetarian) food. And learning how to cook might be an idea. Too many folks with microwave meals and no other food preparation skills.
