Be Prepared…

by Rob on October 16, 2009

Be Prepared.

boysoutsThat’s the motto of the Boy Scouts.

“Be prepared for what?” someone once asked Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting,

“Why, for any old thing.” said Baden-Powell.

When a disaster hits– and you are without power and water– you are prepared because you have food and water and other supplies at the ready;

When someone has an accident, you are prepared because of your first aid instruction and supplies;

When the emergency services are overloaded, and others are calling 911 to try and get help, your family is safe and sound…

You are part of the recovery effort, not part of the problem…

Be prepared for life – to live happily and without regret, knowing that you have done your best. That’s what the Scout motto means.

My son is in Scouts and I’m please to report he is the master of preparation. And pretty good at tying stuff up. With his slingshot and extensive survival knowledge (also is a big fan of Bear Grylls) we are all set for survival.

Preparation is the key whether it’s being ready for the a worst case scenario or a job. Many people choose to reactive instead of proactive. Thanks for the reminder.

Being prepared is always important. I’m starting to get curious to know if you have a story that was your inspiration for being ready in case of a disaster.

“Be Prepared.” That is about the best advice anyone can give and that everyone should follow. As we used to say in the military, “Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance.” It may also save your life or the life of your loved ones.

Rob,
I remember that “motto” from my Scouting days.

I love this Rob.

“Be prepared for life – to live happily and without regret, knowing that you have done your best. That’s what the Scout motto means.”

That says it all.

“Be prepared” is a great motto.

I would caution, however, against obsessing about a possible future at the expense of enjoying now. My Dad spent a lot of time preparing for a great retirement…and it never came :-(

Those scouts know their stuff. When I think of them I think of the movie (which slips my mind right now)where the scouts are in the mountains and all work together to stay safe. It was hilarious.

“Be prepared for life – to live happily and without regret, knowing that you have done your best.” — great sentence that sums up how we should strive to live.

Hi Rob,

I particularly like how you summarize the boy scouts motto and clarify your read on what “Be Prepared” indeed means. :-)

If we prepare for theworse, then we can live with whatever it comes.

While we do our due deligence, it’s also important to maintain a non-doom day attitude.

Indeed! That is personal responsibility. You take care of you and you help those less fortunate – that’s neighborhood law. My grandmother can take care of more people than most able-bodied 20-somethings. It all comes down to perspective.

If an 83 year old woman can make things happen . . . what the F are you doing? My 93 year old grandfather (different side of the family) can too.

You take care of yourself so we don’t have to – THAT is personal responsibility. Don’t be a burden on your neighbor, but keep an eye out for each other.
