I want to address a couple of comments on yesterday’s post about the US economy NOT being in a recovery.
First, one from Kevin Hogan and then another from Lisa M.
Kevin Hogan commented on the fact that Unemployment is likely worse than the 9.8% that is being reported.
The higher unemployment number Kevin was referring to is called U-6. This is the broader measure of unemployment and this is the one that hit 25-30% during the Great Depression. Here are the various versions of unemployment that are used by the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics)…
U-1 Persons unemployed 15 weeks or longer, as a percent of the civilian labor force
U-2 Job losers and persons who completed temporary jobs, as a percent of the civilian labor force
U-3 Total unemployed, as a percent of the civilian labor force (official unemployment rate) **This is the 9.8% figure***
U-4 Total unemployed plus discouraged workers, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus discouraged workers
U-5 Total unemployed, plus discouraged workers, plus all other marginally attached workers, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers
U-6 Total unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers (this is the one that is at 17.0% currently seasonally adjusted)
Here is a link to these Alternative unemployment measures for the past ten years by month. Thanks for the comment Kevin!
And yesterday Lisa M. stated… “Ok, so now that I am sufficiently depressed, scared out of my mind, and completely anxious, what next?”
My intent is not to depress anyone, or scare them out of their minds. It is to make people aware that there are threats that might affect us all that require preparation. Awareness of threat is the first stage to preparation.
What next? Keep reading this blog and I will try hard to answer that question. A good first step is to start planning to have food and water on hand that would feed your family for at least a month. We can build from there…
I might make this a regular Sunday thing where I address comments and questions from readers. I have a lot of questions to answer already and I will be getting to them all in the months ahead. This is a serious and complicated topic– preparation for survival. I am learning along with you on some of these topics.
Glad to have you reading and commenting…

Sunday questions is a great idea.
I have to admit I was starting to get depressed about the recession. Does that make it a depression?!

hahahahhahahhaha Obviously, your intent is not to scare anyone out of their minds, I just happen to be easily frightened! And this is scary stuff to me! There’s no way I could even prepare. I have no room to store extra anything! I hope we don’t have to eat the dog! Kidding, kidding, kidding Seriously, I can’t stand the thought of really needing to do this, it’s very upsetting! That doesn’t mean I don’t think this is a great blog or that this isn’t very valuable information, it just means I’m fragile, and I scare easily, so it’s easier for me to just be in denial. I’m hoping for a little warning before a disaster so I can prepare, but don’t worry, I don’t actually think I’m going to get one.
Also Rob, I comment very late at night most times so things don’t always come out the way I meant them. And I’m usually saying things in a joking way which you can’t always tell from comments without tone of voice. I’m hoping you never think my comments are meant to be negative against you or your post. You have great information and I always look forward to the giggles you give me with the humorous comments you leave on my blog.

Lisa, LOL! you are exactly in the same position of most people.
Do you have all the space under your beds filled with stuff? Maybe you could slide a few low profile plastic tubs under the bed with enough stuff to get you through a7 day emergency. Another idea is to get at least your 7-day supply packed in a very portable “bug out bag” and keep it in the trunk of your car at all times.
We will work on getting you some good answers, I plan to start on the bug out bag in the near future and go through one in detail…
Thanks for reading Lisa, you are exactly who I am trying to reach…
and I hope that none of us ever needs any of this preparation.
Rob
Hi Rob,
A question day sounds good to me. I think folks will really benefit from the level headed advice you give.

There is reason to hope. The people still have the power in this Republic, I think, but enough people must be aware and act.

You do a great job of opening our eyes to the REALITY of the situation. I really enjoy reading your blog everyday. Answering questions on Sunday is a great idea.

Indeed remember what it was like in The Great Depression, watch Grapes of Wrath to see images and remember. And also some hurricane disaster films or things like the movie San Francisco. Things can happen. Preparation is a good thing. I’ve even influenced my sister that we need to stockpile water now.

Harsh reality is hard to accept. Truth might hurt, but lies hurts more in the long run.
Depending on the pesonality, some will be scared, some will take heed & prepare, some just sit tight & observe.
Just do the right things is the way.

You speak the truth. I wish our so-called mainstream media would enlighten us as well.

It would be even more interesting to see on a map how this plays out. Are there particular areas of the country, say, Detroit, where this is worse? I’m betting there are areas where the U6 is well into the 30% range.

Katie,
Here are the U-6 number by state averaged over a 9 month period from Oct 1, 2008 till June 30, 2009. You can assume that the unemployment rates as of Oct 2009 are about 20% worse but this gives an idea of the comparative levels in different states.

We can get ourselves worked up over this, as I have over the years.
I’ve decided that for me the best course of action is to take care of me and mine to the best of my abilities, thus this course as one action in my total control. Next is to lend all the support I can offer to larger causes I believe in, like supporting Ron Paul in the Revolution.
After that I put the outcome in the hands of the Divine working through the people.
That’s what I can do and for me it’s therapy.
I like the Sunday format, keep it up Rob!
My question for next week – unperishable goods that can be stashed in the car?

Very interesting. I do not scare easily and I don’t worry about what might happen. That is a waste of my time. Yes being being prepared is essential. Sometimes the media blows things out of proportion and sometimes they don’t tell us what we should know. I will either weather or perish as everyone will.

Hi Rob,
I like this section of your blog. Though your facts often times do give me a starker view of reality than I am ready for, they are needed. Thanks for showing us the bigger picture.
